SURVCON
It's April 1974. Hank Aaron beats Babe Ruth's home run record and "The Godfather II" wins the Academy Award for Best Picture. And, more importantly from our perspective, SURVCON is established. Today, SURVCON provides proof that 3 decades can transform a 20-employee company with a dream of revolutionizing the surveying industry into the 125-employee surveying and mapping leader that it is now.
The full-service professional land surveying and aerial mapping firm is headquartered in Houston and has offices in Austin, Georgetown, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Texas; Denver, Colorado; and San Diego, California. The staff includes 21 surveyors registered in seven states, a certified photogrammetrist, numerous technicians, and more than 25 field crews.
SURVCON was formed from the mapping, surveying, and construction practices of its sister company, Turner Collie & Braden. Thus began the evolution of the surveying firm from a support group for Turner Collie & Braden to a profit center in itself. The firm's primary focus was initially land development surveying services. SURVCON continues to focus on its key operations of commercial and residential land development; however, it has now diversified into other arenas such as right-of-way mapping for state and county governments, aerial mapping, global positioning system (GPS) surveys, and hydrographic surveying services.
It is virtually impossible to walk the streets of Houston without coming into contact with SURVCON's influence over the past 3 decades. The firm has provided as-built, location, and design and construction surveying on many large-site development projects, from the world-famous Astrodome and the site of Super Bowl XXXVIII, Reliant Stadium, to the Galleria mall and the Johnson Space Center. The firm has also completed large projects in other cities such as Del Webb Sun City in Georgetown, Texas, and the Banning Lewis Ranch in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
SURVCON's loyal client base includes the Texas Department of Transportation (more than 25 years), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Reliant Energy. The fact that SURVCON has retained several original clients affirms its commitment to quality. The firm has also secured contractual relationships with some of its surveying and engineering competitors to provide aerial mapping, deed abstracting, and supplementary support in surveying.
Since 1974, SURVCON has witnessed dramatic changes in surveying technology. The company has progressed from measuring with steel tapes and manual theodolites to using state-of-the-art GPS receivers, digital levels, and electronic total stations with data collectors. The recently purchased Skully, a 25-foot, twin-engine boat designed to perform hydrographic surveying, is an important part of SURVCON's arsenal. SURVCON management believes that technology is a key factor in achieving its future goals, "continuing with advancing technology in surveying and mapping to be the preferred provider in our industry."
SURVCON has moved beyond its early growing pains to become one of the largest and most respected surveying and mapping firms in the southwest. Through diversification of services, dedication to its clients, and keeping a constant eye on technological advances, the firm has grown in stature and is here to stay.
