Pathfinder Dam and Dike impound the North Platte River creating a reservoir of 1,016,507 acre feet (af) that covers nearly 22,014 acres when full. The dam is a 214-foot high gravity-arch. Pathfinder dike is a 38-foot high earthfill structure located about ¼ mile south of the dam.
The spillway is an uncontrolled flat-crested weir on the left abutment of the dam. The spillway has a capacity of 50,310 cfs with 10 feet of flow over the crest. Based upon area-capacity surveys conducted by the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) in 1985, Pathfinder's capacity has been diminished by approximately 54,000 af since its construction in 1909 due to the deposition of sediments. The lost storage is to be recaptured by raising the existing spillway invert elevation by 2.39 feet without increasing the hydrologic risk. TCB is developing and evaluating spillway alternatives to select the alternative that provides the optimum solution. Alternatives developed include broad and ogee crested weirs, a labyrinth weir and Obermeyer gates. |
